A Day with the Cheeks

This post is dedicated to the Cheeks- the ones who helped me get to New York. Well the whole TigerLogic family helped- but Brian did help me out quite a bit- and thank you so much! Briana was the one who first went to the city last year and is BACK AT IT AGAIN!

Briana has anxiously been awaiting her part in my blog- and I promised her I would make it good. So cheers to DGs taking over the city!

I had been talking to Briana for quite some time about living in New York and she had been giving me great advice- the only problem was that I was always alone- I needed a PIC (partner in crime). Well the time has come and she finally got an amazing apartment (where I'm still waiting for my set of keys) and an even better job (at DBA). The day Briana had her interview and Brian would be in the DBA office- I was sent to the Express Preview Party (read about that endeavor in a previous post). I was sad I was unable to see either one of them but luckily we were able to meet up and go to dinner! I met them at Washington Park and was so grateful to see a familiar face- that has been the hardest thing, yes I have made friends but never seeing an old friend or anything gets lonely. Seeing Brian was like seeing another father figure. He had become a father figure and Anne had become my mother figure (as well as both were my bosses) at TigerLogic where I was able to learn so much about office skills and what it takes to work in the real world. Both taught me valuable lessons that I will never be able to thank them for. So thank you :)

Well I met up with them and then the hard part came... where do we go for dinner? We left the option up to Brian and 45 minutes go by of walking around Soho and we were basically back to where we started. Its what happens when everyone's opinion is "doesnt matter to me." Well during the 45 minuet walk we caught up about pretty much everything- TigerLogic, Graduation (Brian barely making it- sorry if that was a secret #Sorry4Partying), how Brian and Briana got hit by a school bus that was being driven by a scary Brooklyn man. Oh and one of the best stories- how Briana tripped in the subway, went falling down scraping her knee and nearly losing her phone to a grate that was probably filled with rats. It was an eventful night filled with Cheese and White (since we went to a cheese bar- life doesnt get any better than that does it?) and plenty of laughter. I honestly hadn't laughed that hard in quite some time.

Walking out of the restaurant I spotted police cars driving down 6th ave with their lights on, and I started counting.. I got to 20, then B started counting, she counted 20 more, and there was no stopping of police cars speeding down the street. We counted at total of 60 police cars and we probably missed so many while at dinner. B and I wanted to go find out what was happening but the father of the group vetoed and said no- probably a good idea. We scoured the internet to find out what had happened that caused 60+ police cars with their lights on go speeding down 6th ave at 11pm at night- but nothing. NOTHING. so strange.

The night ended by getting gelato at the best gelato place in the city which happens to be on the same block as my building #winning. We then said our farewells till the next time we would see each other.

the following Saturday.. a full day with the Cheeks. I met up with B&B (Brian and Briana if you couldn't figure that one out) at Union Square for an adventure filled day. We wandered around the Union Square market and questioned where all of the fresh vegetables had come from. In Oregon you can probably go less than a mile and see fresh vegetables being grown- in the city i would be worried if I saw someone trying to grow vegetables.
But boy did all the food look delish!

We continued to wander around the Saturday market and test as many things as possible- Brian was the only one who tried sheep sausage though. We saw an entire section dedicated to Maple Syrup- Buddy the Elf would literally be in heaven. *Is there sugar in Syrup?* classic movie. Another lesson I have learned from Buddy and my Mom is that the yellow ones DO NOT STOP. like DO NOT STOP AT ALL. So if you are like me and try to sneak past them on a red cross walk- I have learned my lesson (Alex Scott- no more terrifying afternoons of me crossing Harrison). But if other people are crossing I tend to hid behind them so I wouldnt be first.

After walking through the market we made a mistake. We went into PetCo because they were having an adoption day (Dont fear parents- no adoption happened) just a lot of awwww-ing from Briana and I over the animals. How could you not love these faces? (Hey MB- looks like a little emzo)

After picking out all the animals we wish we could have- and the ones we wish we never had seen (the poodles who had multi-colored spray paint on them) We ventured to Eatly- basically a small version of Italy in a New York City block. You may ask- how can they put an Italy in New York? Well I will tell you- what good things come out of Italy? Pasta. Cheese. Wine. Meats. Gelato. that covers the basics. Eatly is a foodies paradise. If you have the chance to come to New York- I strongly advise you to go to Eatly since there is no way to describe it. Eatly is basically an amazing grocery store with tasting rooms (that definition is taken from Wikipedia) my definition is an Italian heaven. I will just have to show pictures because there are literally no words.

When in Eataly...

Eataly New York
I feel bad- because my photos dont give Eataly justice- the place is spectacular, each section is dedicated to a certain food and its just amazing. plain and simply amazing.

And the most important reason I love Eataly is because everything from there would make one amazing pizza.

After a trip to Eataly we had to get back to the hustle and bustle of New York. We went to go meet up with Joe Prat- and many of you dont know who Joe is so I will get a 15 second update. He is an investor for TigerLogic and would call daily and I answered the phones. I would answer the phones by saying "TigerLogic this is Diana speaking, how many I help you?" And my first day of work at TigerLogic, I answered the phone and it was Joe and he scared the shit out of me, not knowing where Rick was- and Julie was trying to help me but I hadn't yet figured out all the hand signals. Overall I have talked with this man for about 300 hours and I finally get to meet him face to face.

Since Brian, Briana and and I were wandering around the city during a heat wave we were all wearing causal clothes-shorts, regular tops and a large dosage of sweat. We went to meet Joe and his wife at a Wells Fargo event. We got there and were the black swans of the events. Joe and his wife were so welcoming to us, getting us seated with food and drinks. But everyone else was dressed very nicely and then there was us- the homeless looking people of the group. So we thought we were invited to a Wells Fargo event- but everyone's name tags said "High Education Conference" and we were a tad confused- well Joe explained it to use- that Wells Fargo doesnt want people to know when they all meet up so they name it something else. strange. Well we enjoyed the Higher Education Conference and then we went to the beautiful hotel that the Pratts were staying at- The Waldorf Astoria.

The WA is the creme de la crop of luxury hotels. It was the first to offer room service, it was the hub of the Titanic investigation, served as the background for Maid in Manhattan, it was where Paris Hilton and her family lived as well as Marilyn Monroe, and many other notable events happened there. Well when I said that we felt out of place at the Higher Education Conference- it was minuscule to how we felt at the hotel walking around and having a drink (B and I stuck to a nice glass of water since Joe was in a Fatherly mood- such a nice guy). During dinner Joe and Brian had in-dept conversations about work while his wife, B and I felt like third wheels on dates.
Waldorf Ballroom

After parting with the Pratt's we left the gorgeous hotel and outside to the real world where we didnt feel like people judged us on our outfits. We went to go to the official NHL Store to check it out- the Cheeks are hockey fans- Brian's dad, Brian and now his son Trevor who just signed with the Colorado Avalanche are all great hockey players- must be a cheek thing, oh congrats Trevor!

We then decided to make our way down to Soho to find this Mexican restaurant that had the sauce on the table- I dont think we ever figured it out. Well after walking for an hours it felt like- and still 2 miles to go (its crazy how far you can get walking in the city) we were dead tired and not close to our destination and famished because we hadnt really had anything to eat all day. We grabbed a cab- (yes i buckle my seat-belt in cabs, its habit) and tried to find a restaurant ASAP. After finding a place and each drinking a glass of water as fast as possible we ordered an amazing meal of pizza, carbonara, and a salad. We all left happy.

And that was my day(s) with the Cheeks.

xoxo
